Habitat House Competition: |
|
Located in the "neck" area of the Charleston peninsula, the Rosemont neighborhood can be found behind a smattering of industrial buildings and storage yards. The neighborhood is organized around a small grid of streets and is defined by Interstate 26 to the East and the marsh of the Ashley River to the west. The neighborhood consists mostly of simple, small scale structures that range widely in materials and colors. The very long and narrow lots of Charleston were originally laid out around 1680, leaving Charleston architects, since that time, struggling to find efficient designs for the confined space. The longest enduring response to this challenge would be the Charleston Single. The Single House was recorded in its earliest forms in the early 1700s, which typically had the narrow, gable end to the street, one room in width and two rooms in depth, divided by a central stair hall. This proposal borrows from this remarkable example of vernacular architecture to achieve critical goals for a modern Charleston family. |
